Boy’s first birthday party ends in shootout where 4 Hispanics die

A discussion at a child’s birthday party in South Texas turned into a shootout that left four men dead and one more injured, authorities reported.

The incident was during the celebration of a child’s first year on Saturday afternoon in Taft, 11 miles north of Corpus Christi, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Sgt. Nathan Brandley said the people involved were distant relatives, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities did not say what the men were discussing, but they said a 20-year-old man was in custody.

The dead were identified as Juan Espinoza , 62 years old; Juan Sandoval III, 20 years oldJeremy Sandoval , 22 years old; and Nicky Sandoval , 25 years old.

The three youngest men are grandchildren of Juan Espinoza, while the injured man, Juan Espinoza Jr., 43 years old , was airlifted to a hospital in Corpus Christi.
